You’ve moved into your first home and you don’t have money to replace the carpets, let alone buy all new furniture! We’re here to tell you, you can have your cake and eat it too!
In a way, we lucked out as we had purchased our couches prior to buying our house. We knew we wanted to start looking within the year but wanted to start collecting some pieces while we still had a little bit of money. We ended up buying our couches from Urban Barn as they had a lifetime warranty (huge plus!). Urban Barn is great because they have a custom furniture sale once a year where you receive 15% your order. They also have a ton of different fabrics to match your style and taste. We were able to go at the time of the sale and choose our own fabrics for our pieces.
We chose pretty neutral colours for our pieces but if you notice, they are different tones of gray. We chose to go with a dark gray Nest Chair and a light gray couch as to not have the room be saturated with the same colour. We would suggest going with a couch and chair that do not have a lot of pattern and is neutral in colour. Then, add your own flare by dressing the room with throw pillows and blankets.
As for the have your cake and eat it too part…if you are on a limited budget in terms of design and are buying new pieces for your rooms, our suggestion would be to splurge on one nice piece per room. In our living room, our coffee table was definitely our splurge. It was purchased through West Elm and while it is quite pricey, the piece is very versatile. Our house is pretty small so this table was great for us because it can also be used as a desk or a dining table for two. The pop-up feature also doubles as a storage space for our remotes, place mats, and little odds and ends. It comes in two different sizes and two different finishes; a darker wood and the light like we own.
This industrial style table is made from mango wood so there are natural variations in the wood grain and colouring. It has been neat because the wood started off as having some green tones in it; however, over time, it has lightened. The blackened steel legs made it sturdy and easy to match with other pieces. At first, we were really worried that the wood would clash with our hardwoods but adding the area rug really helped to separate the colour difference. The table is also made in a Fair Trade Certified facility which ensures safe working conditions and fair labour practices for the people behind it (a plus!).
If you start with one nice piece, your room instantly feels updated and new. So if you’re working with your parent’s old couches or family hand me downs, your one nice piece can be your own taste and addition to the room. The other great thing about it is, if you choose a piece that is fairly timeless, the piece can be used for years to come!
