Home is where you spend a lot of your everyday life. Whether it be sleeping, relaxing, or entertaining, you want to love the space you live in. Take a look around, do you love what you see? Maybe there are a bunch of odds and ends that do not fit together. Or maybe your Great Uncle’s estate played a hand in decorating your home and now it’s full of random hand-me-down furniture. We have all been in a place where we just NEED something to sit on and can’t afford much. But here’s the thing, in order to love the space you live in, you need to love what fills it!
That being said, you can find a bargain on a lot of the pieces you decide to put in your home, but there are definitely some pieces of furniture that are worth spending a little more on. Besides your bed, your sofa is one of those pieces. Think about it, how much of your home time is spent on or around the sofa? Mine offers my guests a comfortable place to socialize, a space for me and my husband (Louis) to hangout with our dogs, and (when I have time) a place to relax with a good book. Plus, a good quality sofa will last a long time (10+ years!), so it is so important to get it right…no pressure! If you are the type that wants to be in charge of selecting the end result for your furniture (like me), custom furniture is a great option! When people ask me where I got my sofa and I tell them it’s custom, I can literally see them shudder. This is often followed with anxious questions like, “Wasn’t it expensive?” and “Didn’t it take a long time to get?” The answer to those questions is sure, it cost a little bit more than buying a sofa off the floor and it did take a little longer to get. But before you eliminate it from being an option, figure out what custom furniture could mean for you. For our family, custom furniture meant buying Canadian made pieces using beautiful (dog friendly) fabrics, while also choosing timeless pieces that would embrace our personal style.
In our hunt for furniture, we struggled because we either had to buy an entire set (matching love seat and sofa) or the colours we had to choose from were just not quite right for us. So I sat down with a pencil and ruler and started designing my furniture from scratch. Just kidding! Although I’d love to take the credit, upon walking into Urban Barn, I immediately fell in love with so many pieces. First, I was drawn to the Berg Custom Sofa. At the time, the store was demo-ing the sofa in an oatmeal colour- so neutral and beautiful. As I sat there dreaming of a movie night, I was quickly awoken by Louis reminding me of our two dogs, who occasionally like to run through our house with muddy paws. Alright, alright he makes a good point, I thought. Next, I fell into the Nest Chair where I quickly slipped into another day dream of our family cuddled up with coffee on a Sunday morning. Pop! There’s Louis again reminding me that the fabric just isn’t suited for our lifestyle or our dogs. I started to panic, did I have to choose between my dogs who I love so much or beautiful furniture?
Thankfully, the lovely staff at Urban Barn walked us through their simple three step customizing system. We never felt pressure to buy and the staff were extremely willing to help. I felt so comfortable that I may have asked them to run back and forth from that wall of custom, Canadian made, upholstery one too many times (sorry!). The first step in the three step customizing system was helping us select our favourite custom furniture style. For us, this was obviously the Berg Custom Sofa and the Nest Chair. Next, they talked about the configuration of the furniture in our space. At this time, we didn't need to know the configuration as we had yet to have a space. I personally wouldn’t recommend decorating your home before you have one; however, Urban Barn and their knowledgeable staff made it possible! They explained how our furniture could be set up to maximize our eventual space, which eased my concerns. Finally, we picked the fabric that would be both pet friendly and stylish for years to come! Even if the fabric was not available at that location, the staff offered options available at other stores across Canada as Urban Barn is a Canadian company.
As we all know, spending a lot of money is stressful; however, we did not have to compromise on anything and because these were investment pieces that we would have for years to come, the benefits definitely outweighed the costs. Not only did it suit our style and the size of our space (phew!), the fabric suited our family's lifestyle. Urban Barn made the whole process simple and stress free, that I was actually able to enjoy it!
In the end, we chose a dark grey, almost denim, Nest Chair and a light grey Custom Berg Sofa. Yes, they are different grey tones but we did not want the entire room to be saturated with the same colour and we love that we can change up the throw pillows and blankets to give our room a different look! We can do this because the colours we chose are so neutral and versatile. Plus, the upholstery has been amazing and spot cleans so well for whenever our children (the dogs) run in with dirty paws or for when that rotten party guest spills their wine (just kidding, friends!)
Remember, sofas are an investment and investing in custom pieces makes sense over time. These are pieces that allow you to both love them while being an extension of your family's lifestyle. Don’t settle, customize exactly what your family needs!
